Why add a battery to solar panels?

Without a battery, most solar power is generated in the middle of the day while many homes are empty, so much of it is exported cheaply. A battery stores that surplus for the evening, and it can also charge on a cheap overnight tariff. Both are zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027.

  • Use more of your own solar

Power your evenings with daytime sunshine instead of exporting it cheaply.

  • Cheaper night-time charging

On a smart tariff the battery can charge overnight and cover the expensive peak.

  • Backup options

Some batteries can keep essential circuits running during a power cut.

  • One installer, one warranty route

Panels, inverter and battery designed to work together, with one team to call.

FAQs

Solar + battery questions

Straight answers to what homeowners ask us most. Anything else, just ask.

Is a solar battery worth it?

For most homes using more power in the evening than the middle of the day, a battery increases how much solar you use yourself. Pairing it with a cheap overnight tariff adds savings all year, including in winter.

What size battery do I need?

Most homes choose between 5 and 15 kWh. We size it from your evening usage, your solar system and your tariff, so you are not paying for capacity you will not use.

Is there VAT on solar panels and batteries?

No. Solar panels and batteries installed in homes in Great Britain are zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, whether installed together or separately.

Will the battery work in a power cut?

Only if the system is designed for backup. Many batteries can power essential circuits during an outage with the right equipment. Tell us if this matters and we will include it in your design.

How long does installation take?

Most solar and battery systems are fitted in one to two days, plus scaffolding going up and coming down.
