Can I add a battery to my existing solar panels?

Yes. Most existing solar systems can take a battery, either through a new hybrid inverter or an AC-coupled battery that leaves your current inverter in place. Batteries added to an existing system have been zero-rated for VAT since February 2024, and most are fitted in a day.

  • Store your solar

Keep surplus daytime solar for the evening instead of exporting it cheaply.

  • Beat peak prices

Charge overnight on a smart tariff and use that cheaper power at peak times.

  • Backup options

Some batteries can keep essential circuits running during a power cut.

  • Long warranties

Home batteries commonly carry warranties of around 10 years.

FAQs

Battery storage questions

Straight answers to what homeowners ask us most. Anything else, just ask.

Do I need solar panels to have a battery?

No. A battery can charge from the grid on a cheap overnight tariff and power your home at peak times. Adding solar later increases the savings.

Is there VAT on batteries?

No. Since February 2024, batteries installed in homes in Great Britain are zero-rated for VAT, including batteries added to an existing solar system. The relief runs until 31 March 2027.

What size battery do I need?

Most homes choose between 5 and 15 kWh. We size it from your evening usage, any solar you have, and your tariff.

Where can the battery go?

Common spots are a garage, utility room or a suitable outside wall. Each battery has rules on temperature and clearances, and we check these during the survey.

How long does installation take?

Most battery installs take one day, with a short power-off while we connect it.
