Get my priceHorsham mixes a historic market town centre with large areas of family housing and one of the biggest new neighbourhoods in Sussex. That spread means the right setup for solar panels, a home battery or air conditioning can look quite different from one side of town to the other. Solair covers Horsham and nearby places including Roffey, Broadbridge Heath, Southwater and Warnham.
Horsham District Council is the planning authority. There are 39 conservation areas across the district, and four of them are in Horsham town itself: Horsham Town Centre, London Road, Richmond Road and Park Terrace Gardens. Nearby Warnham and Slinfold have their own too.
The Town Centre conservation area takes in the Causeway, the Carfax, Market Square and Denne Road. The council’s appraisal says roof equipment such as microgenerators can affect the area’s character and should sit away from public view where possible. A few houses on Denne Road are also covered by an Article 4 direction. In practice, rear roof slopes and outdoor units at the back are the safer choice in these streets, and listed buildings need listed building consent.
Some of the oldest buildings in town have Horsham stone roofs: thick sandstone slabs on steep, heavily built roofs. They are part of the town’s character and are not a good fit for standard panel fixings, so we look at these carefully and may suggest a different roof slope or an outbuilding instead.
Most homes are easier. Victorian terraces near the town centre, post-war and later estates in Roffey and Holbrook, and new builds at Broadbridge Heath and Mowbray, where around 2,750 homes are being built north of the A264, usually have simple roofs that suit panels well. Outdoor units for air-to-air air conditioning on houses have been permitted development since 29 May 2025, within size and siting limits. See our solar panels page for how a system is sized.
Horsham is on the UK Power Networks network. Solair handles the notification paperwork for solar and battery installs, and residential solar and batteries have 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. Every job starts with a free survey and a fixed, written price.

FAQs
It is often not the best option, because the heavy sandstone slabs are part of the town's character and do not suit standard fixings. At the survey we will check whether another roof slope or an outbuilding would work better.
The Town Centre, London Road, Richmond Road and Park Terrace Gardens areas are conservation areas, so panels cannot go on walls facing the road and roof equipment is best kept out of public view. Listed buildings need listed building consent, and we check your address at survey.
Generally yes, as newer homes tend to have simple, unshaded roofs and modern consumer units. Check your property deeds for any covenants, and we will confirm the details at a free survey.
