Planning in Woking

Woking Borough Council is the planning authority until April 2027, when it becomes part of the new West Surrey Council. Most roof solar panels and air conditioning outdoor units on houses are permitted development, so no planning application is needed.

The borough has 25 conservation areas and around 180 listed buildings, four of them Grade I. Conservation areas include Horsell, Old Woking, Mount Hermon, St Johns, Byfleet Corner and Wheatsheaf. If your home is in one of these, or is listed, it is worth checking with the council before choosing where panels or an outdoor unit go.

Woking grew quickly after the railway arrived, and its housing reflects each stage of that growth.
